Red Cross Helps with Britania Fire Evacuations

Cheyenne, WY, Thursday, August 30, 2018 – the American Red Cross of Wyoming continued to provide support for people evacuated due to the Britania Wildfire.

Wednesday afternoon an evacuation center was opened at the Senior Services Center Annex in Wheatland following a mandatory evacuation order due to rapid fire growth. The fire, north of Wheatland, Wy, grew to over 20,000 acres and that prompted the evacuation order. Additional fire fighting resources are heading to the area.

According to James Ledwith, Red Cross Disaster Program Manager for Southern Wyoming, the fire is in a fairly rural area and so far the Red Cross has been called to help one family with temporary lodging,

According to Albany County and Platte County officials all the evacuees have been accounted for and have found accommodations.  Therefore, the evacuation center was closed late Wednesday evening.

High Fire Danger continues across much of Wyoming and people are urged to be extra careful with anything that could spark a flame. The Red Cross remains alert to the fire activity and is prepared to respond if called upon.
