In addition to being ranked near the top of her class militarily and despite the hectic schedule that USAFA cadets have, Cadet First Class Kristen McKenney has volunteered over 220 hours of her time over the past 18 months. She serves the Colorado Springs community through several different helping organizations – Go Baby Go, Care & Share Food Bank, Friends of Garden of the Gods and Wild Blue Cat Rescue –and The Resource Exchange’s, Break Time program.

The majority of Cadet McKenny’s volunteer hours are at the Through the Break Time program. There, she cares for children with special needs to allow their families time to take a break and recharge. Cadet McKenny also coordinates and promotes events for Break Time, encouraging and motivating at least 30-40 additional cadets to aid in the program’s success.

When asked why she volunteers so much of her time to help others, her response was, “It’s hard to explain, but it just feels like something I have to do. There are people everywhere who need help. I couldn’t stand it if I sat by in such a privileged life and did nothing.” Cadet McKenney truly epitomizes the word “selfless” in her service to both her country and community.

This hero is sponsored by Adamantine Energy, a company that is dedicated to giving back to the communities they serve! Thank you, Nationwide!
