Colorado Wildfires – Red Cross Disaster Response

Response Updates

August 11, 2024 5:00 p.m.

Over the last two weeks, the American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming responded to four wildfires in Colorado and one in Wyoming. We opened four shelters in two states, providing a safe place to stay for 119 people, and 2,309 meals were served. More than 85 American Red Cross volunteers supported those impacted by disaster; this included 17 volunteers trained to support health, mental health, and spiritual care. Volunteers also supported three county emergency operations centers and the Colorado State Emergency Operations Center.

The American Red Cross was supported by partners with in-kind donations from 32 community and business donors, 18 private donors, and the Office of Congressman Joe Neguse. At the Disaster Assistance Center, the American Red Cross provided intake for recovery casework; disaster health, mental health, and spiritual care services, and distributed emergency supplies. The Alexander Mountain Fire destroyed 27 residential structures and 21 outbuildings. The Stone Canyon Fire destroyed five residential structures.

While the wildfires have been contained and shelters have closed, the American Red Cross is just getting to work. Our volunteers will be here in your community as long as the need exists, working with everyone impacted to recover from these wildfires. Our case managers are getting to work to support you. We are here to help you recover call 1-800-Red Cross (800-733-2767).

How To Stay Safe After a Wildfire:

  •  Avoid hot ash, charred trees, smoldering debris, and live embers. The ground may contain heat pockets that can burn you or spark another fire.
  • Avoid damaged or fallen power lines, poles, and downed wires. They can electrocute you.
  • Watch for pits in the ground filled with ash. They may have hot embers underneath that could burn you. Mark them for safety, and warn your family and neighbors to keep clear of the pits.
  • Follow public health rules and wear safety equipment.
  • Avoid direct contact with ash.
  • Protect yourself against ash when you clean up. Wear gloves, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes, and socks to protect your skin. Wear goggles to protect your eyes. Limit how much ash you breathe in by wearing an N95 respirator. Wash off ash that gets on your skin or in your eyes or mouth as soon as you can.
  • When in doubt, throw it out! Throw out food that was exposed to heat, smoke, fumes, or chemicals.
  • Ask your healthcare provider or doctor about using refrigerated medicines.

Visit the Alexander Mountain Fire Information Page to see a list of addresses that are authorized to receive credentialing, the locations of the credentialing centers, and the date and times of credentialing. If you do not live or own property in Cedar Park or Storm Mountain, please do not come to a credentialing location. You will be turned away.

Credentialing occurs in advance of an area being opened to allow property owners to be admitted with little delay once the area is safe from active fire. Credentialing is not an indication that there are immediate plans to lift evacuation orders.

Credentials will allow residents into the evacuated areas through a checkpoint. A date to allow entry in these evacuated areas has not been determined. We are working very hard to ensure the area is safe and fire is contained prior to entry.

Are they going to be giving hotel vouchers? They did for Cameron peak. We have a 2 year old and a 15 year old a shelter isn’t the best for our little. We’ve stayed in a hotel for 2 days but can only do that for so long

The American Red Cross is providing safe shelter for anyone impacted by the #AlexanderMountainFire. At this time, the Red Cross is not providing hotel vouchers. We encourage anyone who needs a place to stay or a warm meal to come to a Red Cross shelter.
