5 Daily Mental Health Tips to Stay Healthy at Home

Every day is a good day to take care of your mental health. And now, with … well, all this going on, it’s even more important to focus on your emotional wellbeing. Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, it can be easy to let stress, anxiety and exhaustion overcome you. But you can take steps to ward off these symptoms and boost your mental health.

This week, give your mind some nourishment by trying the following suggestions from Be Well@Red Cross. And to make sure you’re taking time throughout the week to relax and recharge your mind, you can log meditation minutes at bewellredcross.org or using the My StayWell app.

Monday

Connect with Friends and Family

Even if you can’t physically visit with loved ones, you can still keep in touch virtually or by phone. Talk about the pandemic. Talk about Tiger King. Talk about the bread you baked. Really, talk about whatever—the important thing is the personal connection.

Tuesday

Take a News Break

Yes, it’s good to know what’s going on. No, it’s not good to watch virus news 24/7. Take a break for the day, or even just for a few hours.

Wednesday

Get Some Exercise

When you exercise, your body releases chemicals that help improve your mood and make you feel more relaxed. Try one of the workout videos under the Workouts tab in the Resources section of the portal.

Thursday

Go to Bed Early

Sleep and mental health go hand in hand. If you’re not getting enough quality sleep, you may feel irritable, fatigued, and stressed. Try going to bed an hour earlier to give yourself a bit more shut-eye. And remember, experts recommend avoiding screen time at least one hour before bedtime.

Friday

Meditate

Meditation can help you fight anxiety and depression while relieving emotional distress. Sounds pretty useful right about now. Try a guided meditation with the free Provata VR app. Search “Provata VR” in the App Store or Google Play on your smartphone or tablet and download the app. Create your account using the same email address and password you use on the program portal.
