Decker Fire Evacuation Center Closed at 12:30…Red Cross Urges Caution During Reentry

Denver, Wednesday, October 9, 2019, 12:30 p.m. – The American Red Cross evacuation center located at the Scout Hut, 210 E. Sacket Ave, Salida closed at 12:30 p.m. The Red Cross wants to express thanks to the Salida community, businesses, restaurants and local government for their support during the wildfire event.

As evacuees return to their homes they are reminded that if there is a need for local assistance they can call Chaffee County Department of Human Services at 719-530-2500.

Caution Advised When Reentering a Fire Area

If people are going back to property affected by the Decker Fire, they should wear protective clothing during cleanup and avoid breathing or touching ash left from the fire. Go to www.redcross.org/prepare for more tips on cleaning up after a fire. You can also get recovery information from our Emergency mobile app at www.redcross.org/apps.

Evacuation Center Open Today – Closes Wednesday

Denver, Tuesday, October 8, 2019, 1:00 p.m. – The American Red Cross evacuation center located at the Scout Hut, 210 E. Sacket Ave, Salida reopened this morning and will remain open today until 7 PM. The evacuation center will close at Noon on Wednesday. The evacuation center is in the lower level of the Scout Hut and will continue with normal meal serving times today.

According to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Facbook page, the Disaster Assistance Center has been changed to a virtual Disaster Assistance Center. Evacuees can call Chaffee County Department of Human Services at 719-530-2500 for assistance.

Please Note: The EOC has asked that we let you know that they will be issuing “re-entry credentials” until 1pm today at the Scout Hut, if you have not gotten your credentials, please get them before 1pm. Evacuation Center Remains Open Today Red Cross Urges Caution During Reentry

Denver, Monday, October 7, 2019, 9:45 a.m. – The American Red Cross evacuation center located at the Scout Hut, 210 E. Sacket Ave, Salida reopened this morning and will remain open until 7 PM. The evacuation center will be open again on Tuesday. The evacuation center is in the lower level of the Scout Hut and will continue with normal meal serving times.

Daily fire briefings are held by the Type 1 Incident Team on Facebook live around 9 a.m. Visit fb.com/DeckerFire2019 for details. According to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Facebook page, the Disaster Assistance Center has been closed. There will be an evacuee briefing meeting and free dinner at 5pm today, Monday, October 7th at 243 F Street, Fun Street Arcade. Sheriff John Spezze and the Type 1 fire team representatives will be present to give an update on the fire conditions and outlook and current evacuation situation. Moonlight Pizza, Sweetie’s, Anytime Fitness, and Little Cambodia will be donating food. This event is for anyone who was and is currently evacuated. Resources will be available at this evening’s event as well as an opportunity for evacuees to get re-entry credentials.

Disaster Assistance Center Opens Today

Denver, Saturday, October 5, 2019, 9:45 a.m. – The American Red Cross evacuation center located at the First United Methodist Church of Salida, 228 E. 4th St., Salida, CO 81201, opened again today at 8 a.m. and will remain open until 7 p.m. The evacuation center will move to the Scout Hut in Salida on Sunday. Meals will be served each day at the evacuation center. Most of the food has been provided by local restaurants.

On Sunday, October 6, the evacuation center will move to the Scout Hut, 210 E. Sacket Ave., Salida, CO. The same level of service will be provided at the new location.

Disaster Assistance Center opens today

Chaffee County will open a Disaster Assistance Center (DAC) that will host caseworkers from the Red Cross and several County resources that will help people recover from this fire event. The DAC will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and then 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Watch the Chaffee County Sheriff Facebook page for more details.

Beginning Sunday, the Evac Center will be housed in the lower level of the Scout Hut and the DAC will be in the upper level. This will bring multiple resources together for those affected by the Decker Fire.

A Salida community meeting will be held Saturday, 10 a.m. at the SteamPlant Event Center, 220 W. Sackett Ave, Salida, CO. Visit fb.com/DeckerFire2019 for details. Red Cross Evacuation Center Remains Open for Decker Fire

The American Red Cross evacuation center located at the First United Methodist Church of Salida, 228 E. 4th St., Salida, CO 81201, opened again today at 8 a.m. and will remain open until 7 p.m. The center goes into standby mode after 7 p.m. unless there is a need to house evacuees. If that need happens the evacuation center will open its doors as a shelter with cots, blankets, and other supplies. Meals were served Thursday evening and this morning at the evacuation center for nearly 40 people. Most of the food has been provided by local restaurants.

“The Red Cross has been here for several days and will continue to support the community as long as needed. Many of our volunteers are from the local area. Overall the sentiment in the community has been positive but as the fire grows so do the concerns,” said Red Cross spokesperson Kate Walters.

In Chaffee County, small pets can be taken to the Ark-Valley Humane Society, 701 Gregg Dr., Buena Vista 81211. The phone number is 719-395-2737. Large animals and small animals can be taken to the Chaffee County Fairgrounds.

An evacuee-only meeting is scheduled at the evacuation center in Salida for 5 p.m. A Salida community meeting is planned for Saturday, 10 a.m. at the SteamPlant Event Center, 200 W. A pre-evacuation community meeting is planned at 5 p.m. for the community of Howard and other Fremont communities under pre-evacuation at the Howard Fire Department, 8274 US-50, Howard, CO. The Red Cross evacuation center located at the First United Methodist Church of Salida, 228 E. 4th St., Salida, CO 81201, opened today at 8 a.m. and will remain open until 7 p.m. The center goes into standby mode after 7 p.m. unless there is a need to house evacuees. If that need is realized the evacuation center will open its doors as a shelter with cots, blankets, and other supplies. Breakfast was served this morning at the evacuation center for more than 20 people.

NOTE: Incident Command for the Type 1 team now in charge of the Decker Fire has asked people to not bring food or supplies to the incident command center. A Type 1 Firefighting team is self-sufficient and can not accept homemade food items. If there is a need to support the firefighters it will be announced on their Facebook page, fb.com/deckerfire2019.

“The Red Cross evacuation center in Salida has become a center point for evacuees to get a meal and information,” said Red Cross spokesperson Kate Walters. “It was pretty busy this morning with people having breakfast.”

Most people who have been evacuated have found overnight accommodations through local community partners. Meals are being provided by community restaurants with financial support from High Country Bank in Salida. The local Safeway has also provided snacks and water.

The evacuation center at the church is a good place to get food, water, and information. Meals will be served at the church this evening and on Thursday.

Small Pets can be taken to the Ark-Valley Humane Society, 701 Gregg Dr., Buena Vista 81211. The phone number is 719-395-2737. Large animals and small animals can be taken to the Chaffee County Fairgrounds.

Red Cross Moves Evacuation Center for Decker Fire as Fairgrounds Needed for Type 1 Fire Team

Wednesday, October 2, 2019, 3 p.m.  – The Red Cross has moved the evacuation center from the Chaffee County Fairgrounds to the First United Methodist Church of Salida, 228 E. 4th St., Salida, CO 81201. The move is needed to make room for the Type 1 Firefighting Team that will take over firefighting for the Decker Fire.

The Red Cross evacuation center will be open this evening but will be on standby overnight. It will reopen at 8:00 a.m. Thursday and remain open through the day to provide meals, information and other Red Cross services.

The shelter is located at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds, 10165 Co Rd 120, Salida, CO 81201. Pets can be taken to the Ark-Valley Humane Society, 701 Gregg Dr., Buena Vista 81211. At the shelter, there is fire information along with food, snacks, and other refreshments. Red Cross volunteers are on the scene and can provide health and mental health services.

As of 2:45 AM Wednesday, October 2, 2019 a Red Cross evacuation center has been opened at The Chaffee County Fairgrounds, 10165 County Road 120, Salida, CO 81201 in response to the threat to homes from the Decker Fire.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s office has ordered evacuations for Methodist Mtn Estates, Boot Hill, Pinon Ridge Estates and Subdivisions near Methodist Mountain estates, in the area from County Road 110 to County Road 104 including the residents above Tudor Rose on County Road 104 and Mountain Vista Village Trailer Park (formerly Paradise Acres)

Residents are asked to evacuate to the Chaffee County Fairgrounds for accountability and information. Large animals can be evacuated to the fairgrounds also.
