Giving back after the Red Cross gave to him

By Josh Egbert, American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming Public Affairs

Paul Hyde is no stranger to the American Red Cross. He first began volunteering years ago when he lived in Indiana.

“This is the second time around volunteering with the Red Cross both here in Colorado and Indiana. I enjoy working as a Disaster Action Team volunteer helping those in the most immediate need,” said Paul. “I also enjoy working on special projects that go to further the Red Cross mission across state lines and across the nation.”

However, Paul’s connection to the Red Cross goes back years before he started volunteering. As a member of the United States Army, Paul was stationed in Germany when he received devastating news and needed to get back home.

“My father passed away and my mother had already passed away,” said Paul. “I was notified by the Red Cross and they arranged for me to fly home and help me be with my siblings for the funeral.”

Paul was able to make it home through the American Red Cross Hero Care Network, which provides emergency communications and critical services to military members, veterans and their families. The Hero Care Network offers confidential services to all veterans and their families by connecting them with local, state and national resources worldwide.

“The Red Cross provided my family and I with emergency communications along with legal and financial support to ensure all my needs were met to get home,” said Paul.

The support Paul received all those years ago brought him back to helping others. Along with being a Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteer, he coordinates assisting newly onboarded DAT volunteers while they gain experience.

“I have also taken the lead in ensuring the chapter’s emergency communications equipment is in working condition by testing the equipment with the help of the regions Armature Radio Emergency Service (ARES) to ensure it’s a reliable asset to the chapter when its needed,” said Paul. “I like to help the other chapter functions as needed when they require an extra hand in the community.”

Paul urges everyone to listen to their heart and make the decision to help their communities.
