Hannah Hoffmann was attending an academic conference in 2022 when she met an American Red Cross employee who was also attending the conference. During the meeting, Hannah decided she wanted to get involved with the Red Cross.
“It was this personal interaction that sparked my interest in volunteering,” said Hannah. “It was a great object lesson that even when we are not formally recruiting volunteers, as a Red Cross representative, everyone we meet could be a potential volunteer.”
Hannah wears many hats within the Red Cross. She’s currently involved with Disaster Cycle Services External Relations, does information and planning and is part of the sheltering team. During the December arctic blast, she discovered the power of volunteering in one of those shelters.
“I was particularly moved when several of the clients jumped in to help me with various tasks around the shelter,” said Hannah. “Without any prompting, they helped me clean, carry equipment and communicate with other shelter residents. I was particularly moved to see it on this Disaster Response because it reminded me that the desire to help others is a universal trait and we all have something of offer regardless of our current situation.”
One thing Hannah loves about the Red Cross is the diverse and abundant opportunities to serve. In addition, she says the organization provides solid tools, training and structure to ensure that service is effective for those we serve.
“This aligns with my personal philosophy that in order to make the world a better place, we need more than good intentions. We also need a solid approach,” explains Hannah. “I also love that the organization fosters a culture of camaraderie between volunteer, staff, partners and clients.”
And it’s that camaraderie that keeps Hannah volunteering at the Red Cross. Her advice to anyone who may be thinking about volunteering, do it!
“Whether you are looking to help others, channel your expertise, learn a new skill or be part of something bigger than yourself, the Red Cross offers many opportunities to get plugged in to where your passion lies,” explains Hannah. “It has truly been a life-changing experience for me.”
