While off-duty, SSgt. Saves Man’s Life with Quick Action and First Aid Training
On March 8, 2020, at 1:30 p.m. Staff Sergeant Jason Mendoza-Anaya observed a man who had passed out and fell to the floor at a Colorado Springs laundry mat. When the man fell, his head hit the edge of a metal chair.
The impact caused the man to cut the top of his head and he began to have seizures and almost completely bit his tongue off. Staff Sergeant Mendoza-Anaya’s first aid and Self-Aid Buddy Care training skills kicked in and he told a man standing near him to call 911 and request an ambulance. Staff Sergeant Mendoza-Anaya then immediately continued to utilize his first-aid training, until first responders who arrive on scene.
For his heroic and lifesaving acts, Staff Sergeant Jason Mendoza-Anaya, will receive an American Red Cross Hero of the Year award at the Rocky Mountain Heroes Award ceremony, on March 20, 2021.
