Jim Fererro, a proud Colorado resident has always held the Centennial State close to his heart. Despite living in various locations, including overseas, Jim’s connection to Colorado remained unwavering. A former engineering company owner, Jim returned to his beloved home state with his wife marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
Married for 52 years, Jim and his wife have found joy in the company of their two daughters, sons-in-law, and four grandchildren. His retirement was not a retreat into leisure; or, as he puts it, “living in a bubble or playing golf.” Instead actively sought meaningful ways to contribute to his community, leading him to the transformative organization, which would become the focal point of his retirement journey.
Upon retirement, Jim found his way to Sister Carmen Community Food Bank in Boulder County, which lead him to an organization that would change his life— Intercambio Uniting Communities. Dedicated to fostering ESL (English as a Second Language) learning, Intercambio serves as a bridge between English learners from 38 countries and community volunteers. Little did Jim know that this connection would become the centerpiece of his retirement endeavors.
Intercambio’s mission is “to bring English learners and community volunteers together in language classes and gatherings to build skills, confidence, and life-changing connections,” and Jim has done just that. For the past ten years, Jim has actively contributed to Intercambio by teaching a diverse range of classes. His passion for language education has recently culminated in him playing a key role in developing a curriculum tailored to the needs of students from 38 different countries. Jim’s commitment to empowering individuals through language is not only commendable but also transformative.
Jim takes pride in his work with his students who are in the process of obtaining their American citizenship. His dedication to helping them navigate the complexities of the English language and American culture is evident in the progress of his students. Jim sees this work as not just a job but a calling—a calling to empower and uplift those who seek to build a better life in the United States.
Reflecting on his decade-long involvement with Intercambio, Jim expresses that his work in language education has been the most gratifying of his life. Witnessing the growth and success of his students, especially those on the path to American citizenship, brings a sense of fulfillment that surpasses any other achievement in his storied career.
