A Volunteer and Board Member Profile of Katie Tate
By Catie Ballenger, Red Cross Public Affairs
As a preteen, Katie Tate became interested in the American Red Cross after taking a Red Cross first aid and CPR training. Little did she know, Katie would become very involved with her local Red Cross chapter someday. Today, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Mile High Chapter of the Red Cross. She previously spent two and a half years on the Associate Board, which is made up of young professionals who are passionate about their community and the Red Cross mission.
Katie loves that anyone can be a Red Cross volunteer. “There are so many opportunities – everything from volunteering as a shelter worker to an Armed Forces liaison, working as a logistical lead or writing with for the Public Affairs team.”
Last spring, Katie spent the day in Arvada, Colorado, with other Red Cross volunteers and the Arvada fire department educating the community about home fire safety for the annual Sound the Alarm campaign.
“We meet wonderful, grateful people throughout the day. However, there was one woman who stood out,” said Katie. “When we walked up, she was busy working in her beautiful, manicured garden. She told us she was turning 100 years old later this year. During a short period of time, we educated her on how to get out of her home safely, installed a brand-new smoke alarm, and shared time with her. She was not only grateful for the smoke alarm, but for the time she chatted with us. She said she hadn’t seen many of her friends and family due to COVID-19, so it was great to make her day.”
Katie is the Community Affairs Advisor for Chevron, where she is committed to community investment and social impacts on our communities.
Katie and her husband, both Colorado natives, like to spend their weekends outdoors – backpacking, hiking, running, biking and walking to local breweries. Their dog, Shaelee, likes to tag along, too.
