Colorado and Wyoming are threatened by wildfires every year. In 2018 over 8.8 million acres burned in the US as a result of wildfires. Colorado and Wyoming are full of amazing national parks and wildlife where people from all over the world come to visit. In the summer, these visitors engage in popular summer-type activities such as camping and swimming. When visiting or even living in parks and forests, it is important to practice proper fire prevention safety measures to reduce the chance of starting a fire. Natural wildfires typically occur during times of drought combined with lightning strikes that ignite dry grass or brush, but this accounts for less than 10% of all wildfires. The remaining wildfires are due to some form of human contribution such as fireworks, campfires, cigarettes, yard waste burning or vehicles.
If you live in an area that is at risk of wildfires make sure you:
- Are ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice
- Listen to your local radio for updated emergency announcements
- Have a well-stocked emergency kit ready to go
- Have temporary housing available
- Do not return until it is determined safe to do so by emergency officials
People should download the First Aid App from the American Red Cross which gives emergency alerts and has important safety information. Wyoming and Colorado have some of the most scenic landscapes in the world. Be sure to do your part to protect the land and yourselves so that future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy everything these wonderful states have to offer.
