A Lifetime of Serving Others

The Veterans of the American Red Cross

by Sarah Phelps. American Red Cross Public Affairs Volunteer

The American Red Cross honors the men and women who have selflessly served our nation in the military. We are honored that many veterans choose to extend their service as volunteers with us. Our communities, volunteers and staff are grateful for their incredible contributions and leadership.  We want to thank our veterans for their service and feel privileged to highlight some of our dedicated veteran volunteers.

Lieutenant Colonel Young-Hee Song

Service to the Armed Forces - Military Hospital Professional Volunteer, Red Cross of Southeastern Colorado

Lieutenant Colonel Young-Hee Song served for 25 years in the US Army Nurse Corps.  She dedicated her career to caring for soldiers and families as a Public Health Nurse in Preventative Medicine. Upon retirement from active duty, she chose to volunteer with the Red Cross in November 2018 as a Nurse Practitioner in Neurology at the Evans Army Community Hospital.  Young-Hee loves the satisfaction of giving back to the military and remaining connected to the community she served for so many years.

Les Orser

Les Orser served in the US Navy as a corpsman during the turbulent Vietnam era.  He volunteered with the Red Cross in 2012 and has been deployed 25 times to provide mental health care during disasters.  He believes strongly in giving back and contributing his time and energy to people in need.  Les feels honored to serve among his phenomenal fellow volunteers.

Master Sargent Monica Cook

Monica Cook served 24 years in the US Airforce and achieved the rank of Master Sargent as an Air Transportation Craftsman.  A few years into retirement, she chose to volunteer with the Red Cross as a Logistics Lead.  She relishes learning new skills and applying them in disasters and in her community.  Monica also emphasizes how much she enjoys meeting new people in her Red Cross role.

John Walsh

John Walsh served in the US Coast Guard as a search and rescue small boat crewman until 1978.  Forty years later, he rediscovered his calling as a Logistics Lead volunteer with the Red Cross.  He points out that sense of purpose when he describes his experience providing support during disasters.  John leads from the heart as he helps people during some of the most difficult days of their lives.
