UPDATE: Thursday, July 19, 2018, 9:30 AM – The American Red Cross of Colorado & Wyoming has closed the evacuation shelter in Durango that was request to support those affected by the mudslide on July 17, 2018. The shelter.
Six people stayed at the shelter Tuesday night but there were no occupants in the shelter Wednesday night. The shelter also served as an information center for La Plata County and more than 150 people registered at the evacuation center seeking support and information.
La Plata County continues to provide information on their hotline at (970) 382-8700.

Wednesday, July 18, 2018, 10 AM – The American Red Cross opened an evacuation shelter Tuesday (7/17) evening for people affected by the flash flood and mudslide that occurred near #Durango, CO.
Approximately 150 people registered at the evacuation center after being pulled from the campgrounds. Six people stayed at the shelter overnight. Red Cross, with the help of Starbucks, provided coffee and pastries this morning. According to Red Cross volunteers at the seen people showed up at the shelter, along with their pets, muddy and tired.
According to La Plata County officials the county will provide buses at 10 AM to take the evacuees back to the campground to retrieve important personal items like clothing and medications. Those people who have cars/trucks that are accessible will be able to retrieve them. Larger vehicles like RVs and campers will not be able to remove their vehicles. La Plata County has set up a hotline with information about the flooding and debris flow at 382-8700.
The evacuation center is located at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave, Durango, CO. The center will remain open today where people can get more information about the mudslide and the schedule for buses.
The shelter will remain open today and possibly tonight if it is needed. That information will be available this afternoon.
