Spring is here with warm weather and longer days; summer is not too far behind. Safety throughout the season should be a top priority for everyone, whether their activity is hiking, fishing or enjoying fireworks on Independence Day. A few safety tips can make the difference between a great summer and a summer gone bad.
In Colorado and Wyoming, the high elevation brings dry air and fast changing weather patterns leading to an increase risk of dehydration and being stranded in a bad summer storm. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is essential. Elevation also increases the intensity of sun rays on the skin. Therefore, wearing a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 is extremely important. Those with fair skin need to be even more diligent in using the appropriate sunscreen.
A few safety tips worth remembering for those partaking of the great area hiking trails are: *
- Stay hydrated
- Use sunscreen
- Always tell someone where you are going
- Carry mapping tools such as a GPS, compass and map
- Check the weather forecast
- Download the free Red Cross First Aid App that provide users with instant access to information on heart attacks, sudden cardiac arrest, performing Hands-Only CPR and other emergencies.
*Be aware that these tips not only apply to hiking, but to any outdoor activity.
By following safety tips during the summer, people can have fun and be safe at the same time. Covid-19 will change summer for everyone, but nevertheless Coloradans and Wyomingites must still follow the safety tips that have been depended upon for years. So, keep that water bottle full and the sunscreen on!
