Barb Huber: A Distinguished Journey from Firefighter to Fire Chief

Barb Huber, the current Fire Chief for the City of Pueblo, has dedicated her life to serving the community and ensuring its safety. Her journey in the Pueblo Fire Department began in December 1997, driven by a passion for a career that would offer a balance between family time and the challenges of a physically and mentally demanding job.

Chief Huber’s commitment to service started early in life when she joined the military at the age of 17. Serving in the Air National Guard across multiple states and the United States Air Force Reserves for 20 years, she retired with the rank of E-7. Her military experience undoubtedly contributed to her leadership skills and dedication to community service.

In 2003, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Fire Management from Colorado State University, showcasing her dedication to continuous learning and professional development. Over the years, she has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Chief’s Award in 2018, Fire Captain of the Year in 2015 and Firefighter of the Year in 2014.

In March 2007, Chief Huber achieved a significant milestone in her career by being promoted to the position of Captain. Not only did she excel in her role as Captain, but she also took on the responsibilities of Assistant Chief for over seven years. During this time, she went above and beyond her duties, playing a crucial role in the development and management of the Life Safety team. The team’s primary focus was to enhance public education in the Pueblo community.

Chief Huber’s commitment to community safety extended beyond the fire department. Collaborating with the American Red Cross, she initiated smoke detector installations and campaigns, further emphasizing the importance of fire safety. In addition, her innovative thinking and dedication led to the creation of the Directing Others to Services (DOTS) program, inspired by the Colorado Springs CARES program model. This outreach initiative aimed to help community members connect with local resources, showcasing her proactive approach to community service.

Her exemplary service did not go unnoticed. In August 2019, Mayor Gradisar appointed Huber as the Fire Chief for the City of Pueblo. In this leadership role, she continues to uphold the core values of the department, emphasizing excellent customer service, safety, integrity, dedication and vision.

In addition to her professional roles, Chief Huber volunteered with the Red Cross from 2016 to 2019, actively participating in the home fire campaign. Proud of her heritage, she is also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Zebulon Pike Chapter since 2018.

Huber’s journey from firefighter to fire chief is a testament to her unwavering commitment to community safety and service. Her leadership, innovation and dedication have left an indelible mark on the Pueblo Fire Department and the broader community it serves.

Every March, the American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming celebrates local heroes at the American Red Cross Rocky Mountain Heroes Soirée. This year, we are pleased to  recognize, Chief Huber as a community champion who exemplifies service in her Southeastern Colorado community.
