Humanity, A Fundamental Principle

By Catie Ballenger, American Red Cross

Humanity, one of our seven fundamental principles states- “Red Cross, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavors—in its international and national capacity—to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.”

Today, on International Friendship Day, we remember this fundamental principle and use the day as an opportunity to honor the friendships, which enable the American Red Cross to deliver our mission and embody the principle of humanity.

Compassion for others, thoughtfulness and generosity during times of need are the very essence of what makes the world a better place. Thank you to our many friends for rising to the occasion. You have enabled the Red Cross to help individuals, families and communities realize that there is hope.

In honor of International Friendship Day, we salute each of you!
