Red Cross Honors Man of Kindness

By Emil Joensson, American Red Cross Public Affairs

Matthew Podschweit is the type of man that just does. Helping others is in his nature, without thinking about asking for anything in return.

During the day, Matthew works as a manager for creative services for USA Volleyball. He exercises his love for music, the piano, and people for the rest of his time.

Mary Podschweit, Matthew’s wife and nominator to the awardee has a brain injury due to a blood clot in 2013. However, she is not nominating Matthew for his love but for his acts of kindness. Matthew makes others’ lives easier, from gardening for his elderly neighbors to watching deployed friends’ children to taking time to assist with childcare when needed.

Matthew serves as a community hero daily by making life better for the people around him. The American Red Cross helps people in emergencies, while Matthew is there for people doing the little things, but that means so much, any minute of the day.

Matthew is an everyday hero. Thus, The American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming has chose him to receive one of the 2023 Community Hero Awards at the American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming Rocky Mountain Heroes Soirée.

In her nomination, Mary says, “I am nominating him for his love of people, of the sacrifice of time to help make life easier.” With those meaningful words, the Red Cross welcomes Matthew to the group of heroes in our community.
