National Heart Month: Training for Moments that Matter

By Josh Egbert, American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming, Public Affairs

The American Red Cross of Wyoming is celebrating the 60th anniversary of American Heart Month by challenging all Colorado and Wyoming residents to have at least one person in their homes who knows CPR or Hands-Only CPR.

February is National Heart Month, the perfect time to register for a CPR class because every second counts when someone is having a heart attack or in cardiac arrest. Knowing what to do can help save that person’s life.

“CPR can double or triple the chances of survival after cardiac arrest,” Paula Deegan, Regional Disaster Preparedness Manager for the American Red cross of Colorado and Wyoming.  “And keeping blood flow active – even partially – extends the opportunity for a successful resuscitation once trained medical staff arrive on site. We want to encourage everyone to learn CPR or Hands-Only CPR (chest compressions without rescue breathing) and be ready to act quickly, with confidence and knowledge, if an emergency happens.”

Studies have shown that teaching Hands-Only CPR greatly increases the bystander response rate because it focuses on a few key basics. During the first five minutes of cardiac arrest, it is crucial to begin care. When individuals learn these skills, they learn to call 9-1-1 and jump into action to increase the persons chance of survival while waiting for emergency responders.
