Shelter Simulation at Foundations Church in Loveland

Written by Lorraine Janson, American Red Cross of Colorado, Mass Care Lead

On Saturday, March 26, 2022, the American Red Cross of Northern Colorado had a Shelter Simulation Exercise at Foundations Church in Loveland.  We would like to thank Pastors Josh Reiss and Michelle Leggett, along with Church Members, Amber, Rod, James, Meredith, Linda, Patti, and Heather who role played our clients and local officials coming to and checking into the shelter after a fire broke out in their neighborhood causing a mandatory evacuation.

Within the Red Cross family, we had 21 participants from the Northern Colorado Chapter and Kathy Coffey, Regional Shelter Lead from Denver.  Topics covered included, the triggers needed to open a shelter, contents of the trailer, services provided by DHS, DMH, DSC, Casework, Government Ops, feeding and setting up the shelter itself.

It was a great learning opportunity for seasoned and new shelter associates.  The role plays done by the members of Foundation Church brought to life some situations encountered when working a Disaster Operation.
