Standing With Humanity in Times of War

In the darkest moments of human history when the world is torn apart by conflict and chaos The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent (ICRC) provides compassion impartiality and unwavering support for those affected during times of war and crisis. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led to the suffering of millions of people and today as in the past the Red Cross continues to be a beacon of hope consistently standing by the side of humanity.

The roots of the Red Cross can be traced back to the mid-19th century when Henry Dunant a Swiss businessman witnessed the horrors of war during the Battle of Solferino in Italy. Overwhelmed by the suffering of wounded soldiers Dunant initiated efforts to provide care and aid regardless of nationality. His experiences led to the establishment of the ICRC in 1863. In the same year The Red Cross emblem was created. With its simple yet powerful designs it is instantly recognizable as a symbol of help and protection. In 1869 American Civil War nurse Clara Barton visited Switzerland where she participated in their efforts to provide relief to civilians affected by the Franco-Prussian war. During this time she met like-minded humanitarians inspiring the creation of the American Red Cross in 1881.

The Red Cross has several emblems across the world. Including but not limited to The Red Crystal The Red Crescent and the Red Cross. Both The Red Cross and the Red Crescent are emblems of neutrality impartiality and humanity signifying that the Red Cross does not take sides in conflicts and is dedicated to assisting those in need irrespective of their affiliations.

The mission of the American Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. While the ICRC is an impartial neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.
